If you’re paying professionals — accountants, attorneys, engineers, insurance agents — don’t just pay for their work. Make them teach you.

In the 1990’s, when we started in the hurricane shutter business, we didn’t know accounting. So we had our accountants walk us through cash flow, P&Ls, and how to price for profit. We did the same with our structural engineer — we didn’t just want stamped drawings; we wanted to understand the “why.”

That knowledge made us smarter operators, better decision-makers, and far more profitable.

And here’s the pro tip most owners miss:
Don’t be afraid to question your professionals. You’re the client. You’re paying the bill. Not every lawyer or accountant graduated top of their class — and even the best miss things.

You’re not being difficult.
You’re protecting your business.

Smart owners ask questions. Smarter owners insist on understanding.
